You can’t deny it – sailing is a great, fun, interactive, educational way to get out in the outdoors and on the water! Our range of adult courses & sessions will take you from your first experience on the water to building confidence until you are ready to take part in the club sessions and beyond!
We follow the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) Adult sailing scheme which encourages sailors to develop their skills in a methodical and logical manner. Our courses are full of with knowledge and fun exercises led by our fully experienced and qualified RYA Instructors who are overseen by an RYA Senior instructor.
Whether you’re looking for an introduction to sailing or to progress into racing at Midland Sailing Club, we offer a range of sessions throughout the year to help you develop at your own pace.
The courses we offer
RYA Level 1 – Start Sailing
This is our standard starting point for everyone wanting to learn to sail further than in our taster sessions. Following this course you will be able to sail a course in light wind conditions under the supervision of someone more experienced.
If you don’t know your tacks from your splices or your jibes from your starboard’s then we can help you demystify sailing and get you on the right foot to start sailing. This course starts off assuming you have zero knowledge which is great even if you have tried sailing before as it will make sure you have all the base knowledge to get sailing.
RYA Level 2 – Basic Skills
Following on from our Level 1 course, the Level 2 Basic Skills course teaches you the skills you will need to become independent sailors in light winds. You will learn how to choose the correct course to sail, what factors we need to take into account to make the most of the sail and boat. It’s not all serious learning though as we will also be looking at sailing in some fun races, here you will begin to apply some of the theory we will learn in the classroom.
RYA Level 3 – Better Sailing
The RYA Level 3 adult sailing course content includes, rigging and sail controls for weather and sea states, coming alongside pontoons, returning to shore, sailing more efficiently with the five essentials, tell tales, man overboard, rules of the road, more in-depth meteorology, some tasters into the next advanced modules which can be chosen by you.
